How to Clean Wood Stove Glass (and Keep It Clean)

Wood-stove glass goes from crystal to amber over a season — and while the fix is easy, the film is also diagnostic: it’s creosote, the same tar that coats your chimney, condensed where you can see it. Clean it right, then use what it tells you.

The Cleaning Method

  1. Cold stove, always — cleaning hot glass shatters warranties and possibly glass
  2. Dampen a cloth or paper towel, dip in fine wood ash (mild abrasive, free, already in the stove)
  3. Scrub the film in circles; the ash lifts tar surprisingly well
  4. Stubborn builds: dedicated stove glass cleaner — spray, dwell two minutes, wipe
  5. Buff dry with a clean cloth; admire your fire again

What The Film Is Telling You

Fast-darkening glass means the same thing as fast-building creosote: cool, incomplete combustion — usually wet wood (below 20% fixes it), air starved down too low too early, or smouldering overnight burns without hot burns to dry the flue. The full prevention chain: our chimney-fire guide.

Keeping It Cleaner, Longer

  • Burn dense seasoned hardwood — less moisture, less tar
  • Run new fires briskly before damping down; give every session a hot finish
  • Don’t smother young fires with big logs — the sequence in the lighting guide
