Seasoned firewood is wood that has been cut, split and air-dried until its moisture content drops below 20%. Seasoning typically takes 12+ months. Dry wood ignites easily, burns hotter, produces far less smoke and creosote than green wood. Below 20% — this is the widely accepted standard for ready-to-burn firewood. At higher moisture levels, energy that should heat your room is wasted boiling off water, and smoke and creosote increase sharply. We moisture-test every batch with calibrated meters before it leaves the yard.

Look for checks (cracks) in the end grain, bark that lifts away easily, a hollow-sounding ring when two logs knock, and darkened ends. The definitive test is a moisture meter pushed into a freshly split face — under 20% means ready. Our guides cover all the checks.

Both reach the same goal — dry wood. Seasoned wood dries naturally over 12+ months; kiln-dried wood is force-dried in ovens over days. Kiln-drying costs more per unit of heat. Well-seasoned hardwood like ours performs identically at a better price.

Ironbark is one of the best firewoods in the world. Its extreme density means it burns hotter and far longer than most timbers, with low smoke and minimal ash. It’s the benchmark slow-combustion heater fuel — order ironbark firewood here.

The densest hardwoods burn hottest: ironbark leads our range, followed by other dense eucalypt and box species in our mixed hardwood blend. Density (kg per litre) is the best predictor of heat output per log.

Hardwood comes from slower-growing broadleaf trees and is denser — longer burns, more heat, better coals. Softwood (pine etc.) lights fast but burns quickly and can resin-up your chimney. We sell hardwood only, because it’s the economical choice per unit of heat.

Dense seasoned hardwood — ideally ironbark for overnight burns, or double split for compact fireboxes. Low moisture matters even more in a slow heater: wet wood creosotes the flue fast.

Small amounts, yes — a few days’ worth by the hearth in a bin or sling is safe and convenient. Never store large quantities indoors: it’s a fire load and can bring insects indoors. See indoor storage options.

Cover the top only, leaving the sides open. Fully wrapping wood traps moisture and reverses your seasoning. A tarp angled like a roof, removed on dry days, is ideal.

Properly stored hardwood lasts years and only improves — 3+ years is realistic. Keep it dry and ventilated and time becomes your friend, not your enemy.

You’re likely starting with logs that are too big or too few. Build a firelighter → kindling → small splits sequence, leave air space, and don’t smother it early. The full method is in our lighting guide.

Ninety percent of smoky fires come down to moisture — wood above 20% smokes badly. Other causes: insufficient airflow, or a cold flue that needs warming first with quick-burning kindling. Start with below-20% wood and smoke mostly disappears.

One or two natural firelighters per fire — placed under a small kindling stack. More isn’t better; airflow is what grows a fire.

Yes — firelighters burn for minutes, kindling for longer, and only logs burn for hours. Skipping kindling is the most common reason fires fail. Keep both stocked: kindling here.
