What a plug-in electric stove really is
An electric stove is a freestanding heater built to look like a wood-burner. Inside, an LED flame runs behind glass while a fan-forced or infrared element does the heating. There is no flue, no vent, no gas connection and no permit — the whole installation is a standard 120V wall outlet and about 90cm of clear space in front.
That makes them the practical answer for three groups of people: anyone with a dead or unused fireplace they would rather not repoint, renters who cannot cut holes in a wall, and households that want one warm room without heating the whole house.
No venting or chimney work — nothing leaves the unit but warm air
Flame with or without heat — run it for the look in July, the warmth in January
Standard 120V outlet — 12.5A at full power, comfortably inside a normal household circuit
Portable — most models weigh 14–41kg and can move rooms
Sizing: watts, BTUs and honest room coverage
Nearly every electric stove sold online in the US runs a 1,500W element. That is not a coincidence: 1,500W is the maximum a standard 15-amp circuit will carry, and it works out to roughly 5,120 BTU. So when a listing claims 1,000 square feet of heating from a 1,500W unit, they are quoting the outer edge of supplemental use in a well-insulated, closed room — not typical performance.
Our own guidance is deliberately plainer. A 5,200 BTU stove will hold a 400–600 square foot room comfortably and can help in up to about 1,000 square feet if the room is closed off and insulated. A 4,800 BTU model is a 300–400 square foot room. A dual 750W/1,500W compact is a bedroom or home office. If you need more than one room warm, two stoves or a central system will always beat one big heater.
Running costs follow the same arithmetic everywhere: 1.5kWh per hour at full heat, so about 22–23 cents an hour at the 15 cents per kWh US average. Thermostat cycling usually brings real-world use down by a third.
Which type suits your room
Cast-style stoves like the Alder and Orchard give you the traditional wood-burner silhouette. Slimline models such as the Ashford are built for narrow rooms and apartments where depth is the problem. Corner stoves — see the Havenwood — recover floor space that nothing else fits into. Tower stoves trade width for height, and three-sided glass models work when the stove will be seen from more than one angle.
If you are weighing electric against a real fire, our guide to wood stove firewood covers what a wood burner actually demands in fuel, sweeping and storage. Electric wins on convenience and air quality; wood wins on running cost per BTU if you have cheap seasoned logs.
