Brindle Retro Electric Fireplace Stove — 1,400W

$249.00

A 1950s cream-and-chrome stove with a modern heater inside: 4,800 BTU, a curved glass door and enough mid-century charm to anchor a whole room.

Brindle retro electric fireplace stove in cream enamel with chrome trim and curved glass door

A retro electric fireplace stove has to earn its place twice. It has to look right in a room you have styled on purpose. It also has to heat that room without being a toy.

The Brindle does both. Cream baked enamel, polished chrome legs, a curved glass door, and a 1,400W heater rated at 4,800 BTU.

Retro electric fireplace stove at a glance

  • 4,800 BTU from a 1,400W element
  • Baked cream enamel over steel, with real chrome trim
  • Curved glass door for a three-sided view of the fire
  • Three brightness levels and a flame-only mode
  • Adjustable thermostat, remote, six hour timer
  • 21kg and portable, so it moves from lounge to bedroom

Most retro-styled heaters cut corners. They use plastic painted to look like enamel, and a heater that barely registers. This one uses steel with a baked enamel finish and a genuine chrome plated trim, which is why a retro electric fireplace stove from us feels like furniture rather than an appliance.

Design: why the chrome and curve matter

Mid-century appliances had a shape of their own. Rounded bullnose body, tapered chrome legs, chrome bands around the door. The Brindle copies that language rather than bolting a wood stove handle onto a white box.

The curved door is the detail that sells it. Instead of a flat pane, the glass bows outward slightly. That widens the view of the log set, and it gives the flame a soft, slightly warped quality that flat screens cannot match.

Baked enamel is also practical. It resists scratching far better than paint, and it wipes clean with warm water. Painted metal in a cream finish tends to yellow within a few years. Enamel holds its colour.

This is a piece of furniture that happens to heat. That is a different brief from a steel box with a window, and it shows.

Heating performance: 4,800 BTU in context

The element runs at 1,400W and produces 4,800 BTU. That is deliberately below the 1,500W ceiling most stoves chase.

The trade is simple. A 1,400W unit draws 11.7 amps instead of 12.5, so it leaves headroom on a shared circuit. It also costs slightly less to run. In exchange, it heats a smaller room.

Expect a comfortable 300 to 400 square feet. A snug, a guest room, a study, a bedroom with high ceilings. Beyond that it becomes a supplement rather than a primary heater.

  • 300 sq ft bedroom: comfortable on medium, quiet
  • 400 sq ft sitting room: holds temperature with the door closed
  • Open plan: warms the zone around it, not the whole floor

The fan is gentle. You hear air moving rather than a motor. At full heat the sound sits under a normal conversation, which matters in a room built for sitting in.

Every unit gets bench-tested here before dispatch. We check the thermostat, run the flame with the heater off, and inspect the chrome for transit marks.

Placement and clearances

This is the stove you put where people sit, not where the television points. Allow 20cm behind and to the sides. Keep 80cm clear in front of the door.

It looks best against a deep-coloured wall, where the cream enamel does its work. Pale rooms make it disappear. Bold rooms make it sing.

The 61cm height suits low furniture. It sits under a window without blocking light, and beside an armchair without looming over it.

Because the unit weighs 21kg, you can carry it upstairs alone. That portability is unusual in this category, and it means one retro electric fireplace stove can serve a lounge in winter and a spare room in summer.

Running costs and efficiency

At 1,400W the Brindle uses 1.4 kWh an hour on full heat. At the US average of 15 cents per kWh, that is about 21 cents an hour.

Thermostat cycling usually brings an evening in around 60 to 80 cents rather than a full dollar. That is a real saving over a unit that runs flat out because it has no thermostat at all.

Flame-only mode draws a few watts. Run it as a lamp with benefits from spring through autumn and the cost disappears into your normal bill.

The Department of Energy explains why resistance heat costs more per BTU than a heat pump. The Brindle is zone heating. It heats one room well, and it lets you turn the central system down.

Who the Brindle suits

It suits mid-century interiors, guest rooms, sunrooms and anyone styling a room around a period. It also suits people who want a heater they can look at all year.

It suits smaller homes, because 4,800 BTU is honest about what it can do. Nobody buys this expecting to heat a farmhouse.

It does not suit a large open-plan living space. It also does not suit anyone who needs a 1,500W maximum output for a cold, poorly insulated room.

Installation in five steps

Four chrome legs and a door handle. That is the whole build, and it takes about ten minutes.

  1. Unpack the body and set it on a soft surface, since enamel chips on concrete.
  2. Fit the four chrome legs. Tighten by hand first, then with the supplied wrench.
  3. Stand the unit upright and check it does not rock.
  4. Plug into its own 120V outlet, clear of other high-draw appliances.
  5. Run the flame for ten minutes before bringing the heater on.

Check the chrome before you bin the packaging. Transit marks are rare, and a photo within 14 days gets a replacement without argument.

One person can assemble this retro electric fireplace stove in ten minutes. Two people can do it in five, and the second pair of hands is only really needed for the final lift.

Three mistakes to avoid

Buying it for a big room. At 4,800 BTU this retro electric fireplace stove heats 300 to 400 square feet. Push it further and you will be disappointed by physics, not by the product.

Putting it against a pale wall. The whole point is the contrast. Cream on cream loses the shape.

Using an abrasive cleaner on the chrome. Polish will dull the plating permanently. A dry microfibre cloth is all it needs.

Get those three right and the Brindle keeps looking like a piece of furniture rather than an appliance.

How it compares to our other stoves

If you want more heat, the Cast Iron Electric Fireplace Stove runs 5,200 BTU and costs $329. It is the practical choice for a living room.

If you want a modern look instead of a period one, the Slimline Electric Fireplace Stove is 24cm deep and 96cm tall.

If you want the cheapest entry into the range, the Small Electric Fireplace Stove starts at $189 and runs 750W or 1,500W.

Retro looks or modern efficiency?

A heat pump beats any electric stove on running cost. That is not a close contest.

But a heat pump will not give you a curved glass door in a cream enamel body, and it will not run for pennies in July as a decorative fire.

The honest framing is this. A retro electric fireplace stove is zone heating plus furniture. If you need to reduce a bill materially, insulate and buy a heat pump. If you want one room to feel warm and finished, buy the stove.

Plenty of customers do both. The stove covers the evenings in the room they actually use.

What arrives in the box

You get the body, four chrome legs, the door handle, a remote with batteries and the printed manual. Tools ship in the box.

We bench-test every unit before dispatch. Thermostat, flame, cord and plug all get checked, and the chrome gets inspected for marks.

The warranty covers 12 months on the element and control board. A transit fault gets a replacement, and you keep the packaging for a week in case.

Any question before or after the sale reaches a human through the contact page.

Living with it day to day

The dial handles the heat, and the remote handles everything else. Most owners set the thermostat once and forget it.

The six hour timer suits evenings. Two hours on low before bed is enough to take the chill off a guest room.

Clean the glass when it is cool, using a non-ammonia cleaner. Dust the chrome with a dry cloth, and vacuum the rear intake a few times a season.

Nothing inside needs servicing. There is no fuel to buy, no ash to empty, and no flue to sweep.

Retro styling without the maintenance

Real mid-century appliances needed attention. Chrome pitted, enamel stained, elements burned out and were replaced by a man with a van.

This retro electric fireplace stove asks for none of that. The enamel wipes clean, the chrome dusts off, and the LED flame is rated for tens of thousands of hours.

That combination is the actual selling point. You get the look of a 1954 appliance with the upkeep of a lamp.

It also means the Brindle stays a decorative object in months when you are not heating anything. Run the flame alone and it reads as a lamp with a fire inside.

Getting the light right

Cream enamel reflects whatever light you give it. A warm lamp nearby draws out the yellow in the finish. Daylight makes it read closer to white.

That sounds fussy. In practice it means the Brindle suits a room with mixed lighting better than a stark one, and it suits a corner lamp better than an overhead downlight.

The curved glass throws a soft highlight across the front. Keep a little space either side and the effect reads properly. Push it into a tight alcove and you lose it.

Place it where an armchair faces the door, not where a television faces a wall. This retro electric fireplace stove is furniture first and a heater second.

Common questions

Is the cream finish painted or enamel?

Baked enamel over steel. It is harder, more scratch resistant, and far more convincing than painted plastic.

How much space will this retro electric fireplace stove heat?

Comfortably 300 to 400 square feet in a normally insulated room. More if the room is closed off, less if it is wide open.

Do the chrome legs need assembly?

Yes. Four legs, about ten minutes with the supplied wrench.

Can I leave the flame on all day?

Yes. LEDs draw only a few watts and last tens of thousands of hours.

Will it work in a bedroom?

It does. The fan is quiet, the timer handles overnight use, and 4,800 BTU suits a bedroom well.

A final sizing check

Before you order, do one measurement. Multiply the room length by its width in feet, then compare that number against 400.

Under 400 square feet and the Brindle is a good fit. Well over it and this retro electric fireplace stove will run flat out and still lose ground on a cold night.

Ceiling height matters as much as floor area in older homes. A 12 foot ceiling doubles the air you are trying to warm, and it doubles the heat you lose upward.

If you are on the fence, size down. A smaller stove that cycles comfortably beats a larger one that never quite gets there.

Send us the dimensions through the contact page and we will give you a straight answer, including when the honest answer is a different model.
