10 Firewood Storage Ideas for Indoors and Out

Good storage is the difference between wood that lights on the first match and wood that sulks and smokes. Whether you’re working with a balcony, a backyard or a full woodshed, one of these ten setups will fit — each follows the core rules from our storage guide: off the ground, covered on top, breathing at the sides.

Outdoors

  1. The classic covered stack: pallet base, tight rows, tarp angled like a roof — the workhorse that never fails
  2. A purpose-built rack: keeps the pile square, elevated and neat all season; browse storage racks
  3. The lean-to: a simple roof against a fence or shed wall — shade and rain protection with full airflow
  4. A log store wall: two racks back-to-back along a boundary — storage that doubles as garden structure
  5. The wheelie-bin trick: an old bin with drainage holes, lid on, for a compact covered reserve

Indoors

  1. Hearth-side sling or cradle: a day or two of fuel, right where you need it
  2. Canvas tote by the door: carry logs in clean, then park the tote as the indoor store — one trip per evening
  3. A lidded indoor bin: keeps bark crumbs and any insects contained; bring in only what you’ll burn within a day or two
  4. Rectangle log bin: tidy enough for living rooms, generous enough for a weekend of fires
  5. The two-stage system: one small indoor bin fed from a big outdoor stack — the setup every serious burner eventually lands on

Three Rules Whatever You Choose

Never store large quantities indoors — it’s fuel load and insect habitat. Never seal wood in plastic — trapped moisture undoes months of seasoning. And keep the main stack a few metres from the house — the full reasoning is in our storage guide and the safety checklist.

Stocking up before you build the stack? Everything ships from the firewood shop — from kindling to full ironbark loads. Sizing: the winter guide.
