The accessories decide whether a fireplace looks new or tired. A faded ember bed, a hazy glass panel or a lost remote is the difference between a fire that adds something to a room and one you stop using.
Change the look, not the fire
Media is the cheapest visual upgrade in the category. Crystals throw light, stones diffuse it, logs absorb it, and a six-piece log set or two kilos of acrylic will transform a firebox in about ten minutes with no tools on most models. Buy by bed length, not by fire width, and buy one size up.
Fix the things that actually go wrong
A lost remote is the most common reason a working fire gets replaced. Ours arrives pre-paired, so it works the moment the battery goes in.
Heat that never settles is a control problem, not a heater problem. A plug-in thermostat switches the fire at your set temperature for 20 to 21°C comfort and roughly 5 to 7 percent less running cost per degree.
An oversized opening leaves a gap that no trim hides. Filler panels clip in behind the fire’s own trim, cost less than plastering, and unclip if you change the fire later.
The details that separate good accessories from cheap ones
Log shells should be hollow, because solid logs block the ember strip and the fire goes flat. Glass should be tempered and low-iron, because standard glass tints the flame green. Mirror and metal finishes should be real, not plated plastic that pits at the corners within two years. Screens should be five millimetres with polished edges, not eight millimetres that dim the fire.
Care, in one paragraph
No ammonia on coated glass, no solvent on acrylics, no abrasive cream on anything. Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid and a microfibre cloth handle almost every item here. Rinse crystals in a colander and dry them fully before they go back, and store spare media flat in the bag it arrived in.
