1. Moisture — Tested, Not Claimed

2. Species — Named Specifically
“Mixed wood” tells you nothing; “ironbark”, “box and red gum blend” does. Dense hardwoods deliver roughly double the heat of softwood per log. Know what you’re buying — our species comparison has the background.
3. Measurement — Weight Beats Volume

4. Price — Per Unit of Heat, Not Per Pile
Cheap green softwood is the most expensive heat you can buy once you account for reloads and wasted energy. Compare dense dry hardwood prices per tonne, and treat suspicious bargains as what they are.
5. Cut & Split Quality
Consistent lengths that fit your firebox, split faces (bark-only rounds dry slowly), no junk wood in the load. Double split if your firebox is small.
6. Delivery Terms — In Writing
